Whalers Cove Lodge is located in the heart of Alaska's most beautiful, historically intriguing and environmentally thriving wilderness area. Our fishing areas are protected by the geographic fortress of the ABC Islands (Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof) from inclement regional weather patterns as well as global climatic and ocean current influences. Due to this "rain-shadow effect," we enjoy maritime Alaska's fairest weather, with calm, clear and protected fishing waters. Furthermore, Whalers' Cove Lodge is the only full-service sportfishing resort in this region. We are over 100 water miles from Juneau, Glacier Bay, Sitka and St. Petersburg. This means we virtually all by ourselves in a tremendous wilderness fishering region.

Abundant Fish - Whalers Cove Lodge has the largest population of sport fish in the area, with all five species of Pacific salmon, giant halibut, trout, char, rockfish, cod, shark, shellfish and more! Furthermore, this highly productive natural fishery is supplemented by the most successful salmon hatchery prjects in Alaska (Hidden Falls and Mist Cove).

Wilderness - On our uncrowded fishing grounds, our boats are normally the only vessels seen. You will be the only anglesrs on our wilderness lakes and streams in this region.

Exceptional Wildlife Viewing - This region teems with food for fish and wildlife. Expect to see lots of whalers, porpoise, seals, sea lions, sea birds, and other marine life, as well as the world's largest population of bald eagles, Alaskan brown bears and Sitka blacktail deer.

Superb Fishing Water - Our streams, lakes and saltwater fisheries are sparkling clear, pure and free of the glacial silt prevalent in much of Alaska and B.C.

Alaska's Finest Wilderness - Our playground to the east is the Kootsnoowoo Wilderness on Admiralty Island. It is considered the most beautiful and productive remaining mountainous rainfaorest in wilderness status.

The main reason you should visit Whalers Cove Lodge is for the great fishing!! At Whalers' Cove you will have the opportunity to catch all five species of Pacific salmon, Giant Halibut, and over 20 species of rockfish including Monstrous Lingcod and Red Snapper. Our guests also enjoy setting pots for Dungeness Crab and shrimp or digging on the beaches for clams. Whether you're a flyfisher or spinning angler, you'll be thrilled with the five species of Pacific Northwest Salmon, Steel-head, Rainbow, Dolly Varden and Cutthroat Trout.

Whalers Cove Lodge vacation packages include the use of fly, spinning and baitcasting rods and tackle. If an angler would like to use his own gear, we recommend medium-light action spin or baitcating rods with 10 pound test line for salmon or light action for trout with 6 to 8 pounds test. As for the tackle, we use #0 - 2 spinners for trout as well as small chrome spoons and other chrome lures. In the freshwater of Southeast Alaska it is illegal to use natural baits as well as attractant sprays or artificially scented baits ("Power Baits"). For salmon, we use spinners in the #2 - 5 class with body colors of chrome, blue, fire orange, hot pink, chartreuse, pine green and brass. The guides secret weapons are bass bait like Wiggle Warts or other minnow representations for the lakes and deep hole in the rivers.
